Medical Focus Areas

Strokes
The clinic has a 24-hour emergency unit, including the option of thrombolytic therapy. This is a treatment method which may be of vital importance - specifically for elderly patients.

Multiple sclerosis
We provide a full range of diagnostic examinations for determining multiple sclerosis. The treatment options in cases of severe attacks of this disease are provided according to the most recent scientific guidelines – including the administration of innovative immunmodulatory medication and plasmapheresis.

Parkinson’s disease
Parkinson’s patients can be admitted as inpatients, in order to have their medication suitably adjusted. This is often particularly essential in cases of acute deterioration of the Parkinson’s symptoms. For this purpose we follow an interdisciplinary treatment approach, which also includes physiotherapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy. For patients with more severe and advanced symptoms of Parkinson’s, we make use of escalating therapy with various pumps.

Movement disorders (dystonia)
One of our main focus areas is movement disorders. This is why we have a special unit in the Dystonia Outpatient Center, headed by the senior physician, Dr. Michael Rittmann. This is where patients are treated with botulinum toxin in particular. (appointments at tel.: +49 (0)621 8102-3531)

Neuromuscular diseases
Neuromuscular diseases are diseases of the muscular system, of the signals transmitted from the nerves to the muscles, the peripheral nerves and the motor nerve cells in the spinal cord and the brain. At the Clinic for Neurology patients are provided with a full range of options for diagnosing such diseases. In addition to special laboratory tests, these specifically also include electrophysiological examinations, spinal fluid examinations and the option of undergoing a nerve and muscle biopsy.

Motor neurone diseases and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
Motor neurone diseases are degenerative diseases of the motor nervous system, which can lead to severe restrictions of all motor functions – such as physical movements, language, swallowing and breathing. A special form of this disease is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), in which symptoms may spread rapidly throughout the entire body. Treatment options in cases of ALS are unfortunately still quite limited – this is why we find it even more important to provide support to affected patients and their dependants on who are on their way towards dealing with everyday situations.

Age-related neurological disorders
Age-related neurological disorders particularly include increasing memory impairment (dementia), but also frequent falls as well as dizziness experienced by elderly people. Diagnosis and treatment is carried out in our neurological ward in cooperation with neighbouring specialist departments (geriatrics, ENT).
